No Atheists in Foxholes
by Patrick J. McLaughlin
In August, 2005, Patrick J. McLaughlin, the President's chaplain at Camp David, began a seven-month tour of duty in Iraq. Serving as a Navy chaplain with a Surgical Shock Trauma Marine platoon, McLaughlin's faith was tested in the unforgiving crucible of war. In January, 2007, McLaughlin returned for a second tour, this time for a full year. Every day, he looked into the faces of the dying and gave consolation to the wounded.
No Atheists in Foxholes is McLaughlin's poignant and insightful account of his two years on the battlefield. This is a book filled with the stories that never made the news, stories of heartbreak and courage, of faith questioned and faith found, stories of a man God seemingly surrounded by despair. Here, in this collection of more than 140 prayers and personal reflections, the spiritual lives of our military men and women serving in Iraq are explored and poignantly revealed.
